Father wants answers: Prescription drugs may be to blame
By Jim Collar
of The Northwestern

The father of a man found dead last week in his 100 North Main Street apartment hopes anyone with information can help police learn the circumstances behind the tragic loss of two young people.

Tony Grygera, father of 22-year-old Michael “Squints” Grygera, said he believes someone has to know what happened to his son and Michael Guyette, Jr., 23, in the hours before their death. The men that night had different activities before they eventually got together, he said.
“We had questions and things didn’t seem to fit,” he said.
“The impression we had is that there’s more knowledge out there than appeared to be coming forward.

Michael Grygera and Guyette were found dead in their shared apartment on Feb. 3. Autopsies were inconclusive, and toxicology reports haven’t been completed. It could be several weeks before police receive the reports or any definitive answers behind the deaths, police Sgt. Steve Sagmeister said. Grygera said there are indications that his son had taken prescription medication that wasn’t prescribed to him.

It isn’t known whether the men were inexperienced and experimenting, whether they were given a higher-than-expected dose or if they were given something other than what was promised, he said. While the death remains a shock to his friends and family, Michael Grygera made an impact on people throughout his life, his father said.

He loved football and golf. He was a big man with “a heart of gold.” He was a “warm, generous person,” Tony Grygera said. “More than anything, he loved people, and it was obvious from the hundreds that turned out for the memorial,” Grygera said. “He was always surrounded by people. It was easy to like the guy, and I’m not just saying that because I’m his father.”

Grygera Friday offered thanks to the Oshkosh Police Department and the Winnebago County Coroner’s staff for their professionalism and sympathy during the investigation. Anyone with information on the deaths can call the Oshkosh Police Department at 236-5700.

Learning the circumstances behind the death of the man is important beyond the scope of closure for friends and family, Tony Grygera said.

“If we can help prevent this from happening to others, then maybe some good can come out of this,” he said.

FEBRUARY 14th Press Release

The Oshkosh Police Department and Winnebago County Wide Crime Stoppers is asking for the community’s help.

As reported in the Oshkosh Northwestern on Saturday, February 12th, there are still some unanswered questions in the deaths of Michael Grygera and Michael Guyette Jr. in the hours before their death on February 3rd.  The autopsy results were inconclusive and the toxicology results are not back yet. The Oshkosh Police Department detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.

Both the Oshkosh Police Department and Michael Grygera’s father Tony believe that there is more information known to persons in the community. There may be others that may have some information about the activities of Michael Grygera and Michael Guyette Jr in the hours preceding their death.

The Oshkosh Police Department is asking that anyone with information on these men or their whereabouts on February 2nd and February 3rd to call the Oshkosh Police Department at (920) 236-5700 or call Winnebago County Wide Crime Stoppers at 1-800-621-CASH (2274) or on the web @ www.winnebagocrimestoppers.org.
