Oshkosh SpongeBob goes MIA

Another casualty of theft taking place nationwide

By Jim Collar
of The Northwestern

SpongeBob Squarepants has gone missing, and Oshkosh police are fairly certain the popular cartoon character didn’t retreat to his pineapple under the sea.

Oshkosh police this week responded to the Burger King restaurant, 800 S. Washburn St., on reports that their nine-foot inflatable version of SpongeBob apparently was stolen from the rooftop.

Employees believed the theft occurred overnight Tuesday. They called officers to the restaurant on Wednesday morning.  Workers at the Washburn Street Burger King declined to comment on the theft Friday.

“SpongeBob” is an animated program that follows the adventures and exploits of fry cook SpongeBob and his aquatic friends in the underwater community of Bikini Bottom.

Oshkosh’s SpongeBob has been far from the first to fall in the hands of captors. The buck-toothed, tie clad kitchen sponge of Nickelodeon fame has been a hot target of thieves across the state and country in recent weeks.
