Investigation into fatalities continues

Officials determine whether crashes on CB coincidental

By Jim Collar
of The Northwestern

Authorities on Friday said traffic reconstruction efforts could help them determine whether two fatal traffic crashes that happened within minutes of each other along County Trunk CB Thursday were coincidental or the result of similar roadway factors.

Kazuko Ige, 78 of Princeton, died at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center Thursday afternoon following a crash at the intersection of County Trunk CB and Oakridge Road just before 3 p.m.

Joseph J. DeBruin, 51 of Larsen, died after a crash at the Winchester Road intersection at 3:10 p.m.

Cars in both cases were struck by pickup trucks heading northbound on County Trunk CB.

Lt. Nick Scorcio of the Wisconsin State Patrol said investigation into both crashes is far from complete. According to one witness, the Oakridge Road crash may have been caused by failure of a driver to stop at a red light, he said.

The state patrol will reconstruct both crash scenes before reaching any determination into the official causes, Scorcio said.

“We still have to look at all the factors,” he said. “We’ll take into account what the witnesses had to say, we’ll look at the skid marks. There’s still a lot to look at.”

Winnebago County remains on pace to reach its highest number of traffic deaths in two decades. The current toll of eight traffic deaths compares to 10 through the entire year of 2001, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Last year, 22 people died in traffic accidents. It was the highest number of traffic deaths since 1984, where 28 died, the transportation department reports.

Town of Menasha officers are seeking assistance in their investigation into DeBruin’s death.
